Regarding Pets

In Pern there are several types of Pets that are aloud. They dont call them what you would call them here on earth, and have a Limited variety. I've made a post for every different type of Pet you can have, with pictures are conditions to having them.

Firelizzards, or Flits as they are most commonly called IC, are the dragons ansestor. Kitty Ping modified their genes to make the giant dragons. They only come in cannon colors: Gold, Bronze, Brown, Blue and Green.

Any one person can impress many Flits. In the books, Menolly (pictured above) impresses a whole clutch. Traditionaly only females can impress a Gold Flit at hatching, but a male can win over a wild one with kindness and good deeds, such as saving her clutch.

With instant Flits, only Green and Blue Flits may be already adults, while Browns can only be hatchlings still.

Talking to Flits
When talking to a Flit, use normal speech. But when it talks back, use these ~~(insert speech here)~~
Flits dont "speak" so much as give you their feelings and most basic thaughts. So a Flit telling you it was hungry would say ~~Bignose Hungry, Feed plz now!?~~ and one asking to play would say ~~Play! Play! Bignose want Play!~~

Clutches
Like dragons, clutch size and color depends on the parents.

Gold The largest Golds are the size of small cats, about 4 inches at the shoulder. The smallest are 2 1/2 inches tall.


Bronze The largest Bronzes are about 3 1/2 inches at the shoulder. The smallest are only 2 inches tall.


Brown The largest Browns are about 3 inches at the shoulder. The smallest are only 1 1/2 inches tall!


Blue The largest Blues are about 2 1/2 inches at the shoulder. The smallest are only 1 1/4 inches tall!


Green The largest Greens are about 2 inches at the shoulder. The smallest are only 1 inch tall!

Canines are what they call dogs here on Pern. When the colonists first arrived, they only brought a few breeds with them, mostly only those that would work or somehow earn their keep. The others were clones of the dogs the colonists had as pets on earth.

On Pern, the dogs adapted to the new climate by growing shaggy and much longer fur to keep warm.

Breeds

These little dogs are for pest control, flushing out young tunnelsnakes from the weyr, hold or hall. They come in most common canine colors and are the most common breed kept as pets.

Most often seen in Holds that have a lot of Herdbeast, these dogs are bred to sheperd the animals and protect herds against larger Tunnelsnakes and Wherries. These dogs are Border CollieXSheperdsXHeelers. This makes for prime herding, hunting, and sheperding dogs/skills. They come in Black, White, Spotted, Blacktop (Aka: border Collie colored), Red Spotted(like Red Heelers), Blue Spotted (like Blue Heelers) Tan and Black&Tan.

Used to guard hold, Weyr and hall from intruders and large pests. They are rarer than any other type of dog and cost a huge amount of money. Traders also usually have one for protection. They only come in the one color.

Still highly resembling their Terran ancestors, the ladies Canine is bred and used for one thing; to be a pet. They were bred originally by Lady Holders wanting to keep the breed alive, thus they got the name ladies Canine.

Felines are what they call cats here on Pern. When the colonists first arrived, they only brought a few breeds with them, mostly only larger tabby varieties, but also some more delicate breeds that colonists wanted.

On Pern, the cats adapted to the new climate by growing shaggyer fur to keep warm.

Breeds
The most common Felines on Pern, they are descendant from the Tabby cats brought by the colonists, including several Maine Coon Cats. They are used mostly for pest control.

These felines are mostly only kept in major holds, purely as pets. They are all descendant from two white Maine Coons brought to Pern by colonists.

The purest breed of Feline, Ragdolls are descendant almost exclusively from the 100 or so Ragdolls brought to Pern by colonists. They are only used as Pets, but are kept in almost every Hold, Hall and Weyr.

Having not changed at all since the colonization of Pern, these cats are most common in Weyrs and Halls, as Holders seem to think of them as bad luck. They make excellent mousers, and the few holders who keep them usually have them protect their harvests.

Runners are what they call horses and Ponys here on Pern. When the colonists first arrived, they brought a vast number of diffrent breeds in the form of embreos. Since then, the Pernese have bred them for every thinkable purpose.

A Note Regarding Souldew

Souldew, the stallion owned by our current Weyrleader, controled by LightningRip. His unique colors are passed to his offspring, and only the decendants of Soulddew may have those colors. LightningRip does take requests for character's mares to be mated with Souldew, and his descendants can also have the colors.

Breeds
Racer runners are the direct descendants of thoroughbred Horses. They are used by Harpers to move between holds quickly and bred to race during intervals.

These Runners were bred from Arabians and Friesians and make the best mounts for ladies. Men also use them, for they are docile, easy to train and beautiful. They are most commonly Bay in color, but Blacks are the most prized.

This Runner was bred from Gypsy Cobs by the Traders to be a useful dual purpose Runner, both able to be ridden and driven. They are gaining popularity within holds as riding runners due to their striking coloration.

These Runners were bred from Mountain Horses for use around the weyrs and in the mountains. They also make good teenager mounts.

Gold runners are ponys about 13-14hh that have been bred to be exclusivly Chestnut-Palomino-Cremello. Due to this, they come in three color types.

Very few birds survived long on Pern, but due to the re-discovery of AVIS, genetic engineering and artificial creation of eggs, they are now able to hatch out pet birds on request, and some of these have even started to breed.

Species


Macaws
Originally brought by a few as pets and extra embryos as future breeding stock, the macaws never got unfrozen, so the first macaws to see Pern were actually more that 3,000 turns old. They are not given out as pets by genecrafters lightly, and a bred hatchling can cost upwards of 5,000 marks.


Cockatoos
Coveted for their ability to talk, they are in great demand and short supply. Genecrafters only allow people who have proven that they can raise a Flit to have one. Bred hatchlings can cost upwards of 4,000 marks.


Budgies
These much loved pets are more common than either other parrot, but much shorter lived, due to the fact that Flits think they look like food. A bred hatchling can cost upward of 500 Marks

Some People can have pet fish, but they are mostly caught from the wild, or are made by genecrafters.

Genecrafters can bring back any terran pet fish or modify (or splice) pernese natives.

They are kept like goldfish for single fish, in a bowl. Later on in the RP, we will make larger tanks available for sale, and one of your characters may have a nice fishy collection.
